The eleven Templar bureaus in Tyr are essentially the same as the ones listed in "The City State of Tyr" supplement. What needs to be discussed here are the standard uniforms and ranks of templars within Tyr's bureaucracy. The standard uniform of any Templar, unless otherwise noted, is either a white robe tied with a colored sash, or a white tabard worn over a dyed cotton shirt and white pants, and tied at the waist with a colored sash. Shirt and sash color depend on which bureau the templar works for. Each bureau in Tyr has its own color, and these are listed below.

Administration: These templars, who more often than not work indoors, wear the traditional white robes of their station, tied at the waist with a white silk sash.

The Arena: Arena templars usually wear the standard tabard ensemble, tied at the waist with a cotton sash of the finest cobalt blue. Their shirts are also dyed blue, and their pant legs have blue piping up the sides.

Fields: Since their job takes them into the cotton and faro fields of Tyr, templars of the Fields Bureau wear their white tabards over green cotton shirts and short white pants, tied at the waist by a green belt.

Finance: When assigned to an administrative position, Finance templars wear white robes tied at the waist with a golden yellow sash. When abroad on tax-collecting duties, they wear white tabards over white shirts and pants, tied with the same golden belt at the waist.

Gardens: Like their cousins in the Fields bureau, the Bureau of Gardens gives its templars short pants to wear with their white shirts and tabards. Sashes worn by the Garden templars are lime green.

Mines: The sashes worn by Mine Bureau templars are woven from cotton that is dyed a dark, non-reflective gray. Otherwise, they wear standard templar white.

Public Works: Construction templars on the job wear as little as possible in the oppressive heat of Athas' sun, while the tools of their trade hang from brown leather belts. When working in administrative capacities, they wear the standard white tabard over a brown shirt and brown pants, tied with a brown cotton belt.

Security: For all intents and purposes, Security Bureau templars are Tyr's police force. Members of this much-feared bureau wear white tabards over black tunics and pants, drawn at the waist by a bright red sash. They are, usually, the only templars in Tyr who walk around armed. Security templars "on the beat" wear either leather or studded leather armor, and use short swords, cudgels, and throwing wedges as weapons.

State: State Bureau templars, when working in high-profile jobs, wear white robes with a black sash of shiny silk. When abroad, they are usually seen wearing a fine white tabard over white pants and tunics, tied at the waist with a black cotton sash.

Trade: Trade Bureau templars wear a white cotton tabard with purple shirts and black pants, and their sashes are made of bright purple silk.

Water: Templars from the Water Bureau wear the standard white tabards, shirts, and pants, tied at the waist with a cotton sash of greenish-blue hue.

A templar's rank is determined in a number of fashions, the most obvious being a run of colored thread on the shirt sleeves and/or cuffs. The thread is usually woven in a pattern, and is usually of a metallic hue. In addition, templars above centurion rank are permitted to wear beards and mustaches, while those of lower ranks must remain clean-shaven. Medallions are no longer worn by Tyrian templars to indicate rank, most of them having been destroyed after Kalak's demise. Sample ranks and the insignia that represents them are listed below.

RankLevel *Insignia
Novice1None -- Templars of this rank have no distinguishing markings.
Corporal2A series of short vertical lines sewn horizontal to one another in red silk around cuff and/or sleeve.
Overseer3-4A zig-zag pattern sewn in red silk thread around cuff and/or sleeve.
Centurion5-6A diamond pattern sewn in red silk thread around cuff and/or sleeve.
Lieutenant7-8One horizontal line sewn in silver thread around cuff and/or sleeve.
Captain9-10Two horizontal lines sewn in silver thread around cuff and/or sleeve.
Senior Templar11-12A single spiral design sewn in gold thread around cuffs and collar.
High Templar13+An intricate spiral pattern sewn in gold thread around cuffs and collar.

* : Please note that the "Level" listing is only a guideline. It's my opinion that a templar's level need not indicate his skill or martial prowess, thus making rank based on level impractical. Realistically, rank in a templar bureau should be earned through accomplishment, bribery, favor, wealth, station, or a combination thereof, and not necessarily through level advancement and experience points.

Awards for valor, initiative, and individual achievement are usually awarded in the form of decorations--cloth insignia or ceramic and metal pins worn on the templar's sash on formal occasions. Some of the higher awards are represented by rings and medallions, as well as specially-made items (such as Tyr's highest award for valor, the Dragon's Tooth, a gold-accented dagger made from the finest ivory and bone).

Most templars outside of the Security Bureau do not carry weapons, though they are all permitted to do so. All Tyrian templars are trained in the use of the short sword, and obsidian-edged weapons are assigned to them. More expensive weapons may be bought by the individual templars at a later time. Many bureaus give their templars additional martial training. Security Bureau templars, for example, are all expected to be well versed in the use of the short bow, the short sword, the cudgel, as well as a special wooden throwing wedge used to incapacitate suspects (see below).

Tyrian Throwing Wedge (Wongala)

Notes : This weapon is equal to a wongala--a wooden combat boomerang used by the Australian Aborigines on Earth. Originally featured in the article "Primitive Weaponry" (Dragon Magazine, October 1994), I've included the basics of the weapon here so that you may use it in your game. The weapon is one or two feet in length, and is always made of wood. It can be used as a club in melee combat, doing the same amount of damage either way.

Proficient Use : When using the weapon anywhere between short range and point blank range, a special attack may be made wherein the thrower hurls the wongala at the ground in front of his foe. When done correctly (against a man-sized target), the wongala bounces up into the opponent's face. While this does no more than standard damage, it leaves the target unable to perform any actions for the next combat round.

Specialized Use : A specialist may increase his ROF to 2/1, and throws the wongalas in such a way as to increase their ranges to 2/4/6.

Note : If you can find a copy of the October '94 Dragon, I strongly suggest you pick it up. The "Primitive Weaponry" article is very useful for expanding on the Athasian arsenal.
