A Wonderful Friend and Ally

[The Silver Tankard, Common Room]
In this dimly lit tavern, mismatched tables and chairs are spread around the room, providing plenty of seating. Neatly labeled, a small menu is tacked above the polished vyrewood bar where several stools await thirsty patrons. In the large open-hearthed fireplace, a crackling fire is kept going all year long. A fur-draped doorway at the back leads onto the terrace, while a wooden door leads out onto the street. You see Mariposa. Also here is Teru, Tad, and Rusty.

The tantalizing aromas of roasting meat and baking breads come from a wide archway in the north wall, delightfully scenting the room.

Merow comes into the tavern.
Rusty asks, "Lets have a drink, shall we?"
You smile at Mariposa.
Merow says, "I'm fine actually."
Rusty says, "Merow's buying.."
Rusty grins.
Teru pulls out a chair for Rusty to sit in.
Teru smiles at Rusty.
Rusty smiles at Teru.
Rusty says, "Thank you."
Rusty sits down on a sturdy oak chair.
You say, "I've brought my own wine. Fresh from the Sum-- ah, fresh from Never."

Rusty ponders the situation.
Merow asks, "What seems to be the trouble?"
Rusty says, "Well.."
Teru asks, "Trouble?"
Tad leans against the bar, trying to get the attention of the bartender.

Tad swallows some dark dwarvish ale.
Rusty says, ".. I wanted us all to talk.. to try and avoid trouble.."

Teru ponders the situation.
Rusty says, "You know I like you, Merow. And I respect you."
Rusty says, "Just as I feel about Tad and Jurion."

Rusty says, "I know that all of you.. and Teru have had your differences.."
Tad shakes her head.
Teru peers at Rusty.
Rusty says, "And still do."

Rusty whispers something to Teru.
Teru says, "No i do not mind.."
Rusty nods.
Teru kisses Rusty on the nose.
Rusty says, "And there was something else.. that perhaps.. will shed some light on a past situation.."
You act: Jurion rests his bottle on his knee.
Rusty says, "Earlier, one of your own visited us, Merow.. a guardsmen.. we didn't catch his name."

Rusty says, "I'd like to try and rectify it. I care about all of you."
Teru smiles at Rusty.

Teru shakes his head at Merow.
Rusty says, "I don't think thats the case."

Merow asks, "Don't you?"

Tad crosses her arms.
Rusty says, "I myself was jailed for speaking up against the tax collectors sister."
Rusty says, "Not the man himself, only his sister."
Rusty says, "That's too far, Jurion."
Teru opens his mouth as if to say something.
You ask, "Then why not address your complaints to the King?"
Teru shrugs slightly.
You say, "Go to the Coronation, present a petition."
Rusty says, "And Merow, even you agreed that day that it happened."
Teru says, "I plan to."
Teru nods to you.
Rusty nods to you.
Merow smiles sadly.
Rusty says, "Merow, this is not a reflection on you.. or your chosen lifestyle.."

Rusty says, "I just don't think.. that everything is as cut and dry as you believe it is."
Teru agrees with Rusty.
Merow says, "Perhaps there are shades of grey, even among the guard itself."

You say, "It won't help the situation to blanket the entire guard with accusations of injustice."
Tad mutters, "Or shades of darkest black."
Rusty nods to you.
You say, "I do not like guards, as a rule."
Rusty says, "And you're right.."
Rusty says, "But think about it a moment, Jurion.."
Rusty says, "Teru purchased an item in good faith that it was his.. to do with as he would."
Teru asks, "If one guard will do it..why wont another..and a third..and so on?"
Teru raises an eyebrow in your direction.
Rusty says, "When he was asked to part with such property, he refused..for whatever reason.."
Rusty says, "And was jailed and beaten for it."
You ask, "May I speak to you privately on that account later, Teru?"
Teru says, "Of course."

You nod to Teru.
Rusty says, "The man had a right to be angry.. even bitter."
You say, "Was he jailed by order of the guard or by order of someone else?"
Rusty glances at Teru.

Teru says, "Sarafina..but hshe did not order the guard to beat me.."
Rusty whispers something to Tad.
Teru frowns.
You say, "Then go to the Duchess and present your case."
Rusty nods.
Merow says, "Yet the entire guard is continually blamed-for evidence, look at that parchment again."
Tad shrugs at Rusty.
You agree with Merow.
You say, "I do not like guards. But I trust and respect Merow."
You say, "I believe that there are good guardsmen within the ranks."
Rusty asks, "Could we.. agree.. that that parchment was written in haste?"

You say, "And accusations like this tarnish the honest guards within the organization."
Rusty asks, "What other four?"
Merow asks, "Were they written in haste as well?"

Teru says, "It was not a direct threat against the guards..only to try to force some people mto open their eyes to whats going on around them.."
Rusty glances at Teru.

Merow says, "Seems a bit much to believe that five, even six were written in haste."

Teru says, "No they werent written in haste..."
Teru shakes his head at Merow.
Rusty says, "He was angry, and disappointed. Hell, Merow.. so am I.. with alot of the actions that have been taking place.."
Rusty glances at Teru.
Merow grins wryly.
Rusty sighs.
Teru says, "It was written to force people to opent heir eyes to several beatings, unwarranted arrests, that the guard has taken credit for."
Teru shrugs.
Teru says, "Nothing more."
Rusty nods to Teru.
Merow says, "And now, why should I forgive all these things, ignore his behavior-casting at folks in town, badmouthing me to my face in a public place."
Teru shifts his eyes to Merow.
Merow raises an eyebrow.
Rusty ponders the situation.
Teru says, "You have NO idea why i casted at anyone in town..you were not there."
Teru snorts.
Rusty says, "Let's not argue.. please."
Merow asks, "Were you physically attacked?"
Tad says, "Because they called you names, you lousy..."
Tad glances at Teru and mutters something under her breath.
Merow says, "If not, then you broke the law."
Teru says, "An insult is an insult.."
Rusty pokes Tad.
Teru shrugs indifferently.
Merow grins at Teru.

Tad shrugs.
Merow says, "According to that logic, I should swing at you every time you insult me."

Merow asks, "So, for clarification, he says he won't change his mind, that he is trying to sway people against the imperial guard-the guard that's responsible for the king's safety, and will continue to break the law in town...what exactly am I supposed to say to that?"
Rusty says, "Merow.. he's not saying that."
Mariposa grins at Merow.
Teru says, "I said nothing of the sort.."
Teru chuckles.
You ask, "What are you saying, then?"
Rusty says, "He's saying he's trying to make people take a look around.. and realize that SOME facets of the guard.. are out of proportion with the Kings laws."
Teru says, "I am saying that i want people to form their own opinions."
Rusty says, "Not the Guard as a whole."

Teru says, "Not be lead like sheep to pasture."

Rusty nods.
You ask, "Perhaps you should be a bit more precise in your parchments, in that case?"

Seeing that it's empty, Rusty sets her small glass aside.

Teru says, "Then copying them took only a few minutes."
Merow says, "'Four out of five citizens will be treated unfairly, unjustly, and horridly by imperial guardsmen before they pass into the spirit realms.'"
Teru says, "Exxageration to get a point across."
Merow says, "Perhaps you should think longer before you put things to parchment."
Teru winks at Merow.
You say, "Given that, I trust we won't see any more of these parchments around."
Teru chuckles at you.
You say, "Or at least, they'll be better thought out."
You grin wryly at Teru.
Teru says, "Doubtful..not written by me at any rate."

Merow asks, "'Do you realize that the imperial guard-not a few imperial guardsmen-is hurting your friends, your neighbors?'"

You say, "For I assure you I shall, unless you convince me otherwise."
You smile at Teru.
Teru says, "As i said..i have no clue what you are talking about.."
Rusty gawks.
Teru shrugs at you.
Rusty asks, "Jurion.. what are you saying?"
Rusty peers at you.
You act: Jurion lifts one shoulder in an idle shrug.
Teru says, "He is trying to blackmail me."
Teru nods to Rusty.
You say, "Apparently about something that never happened."
Teru agrees with you.
You say, "I merely point out that your doings are not so hidden as you seem to think, Teru."
Rusty ponders your existence.
You say, "I hesitate to believe that your intentions are good when you're mucking about with a veckle like Rade."
Teru glances at you.
Teru chuckles to himself.
Rusty says, "I.. am afraid I don't understand."
You say, "Perhaps Teru has not been so open with you as he ought to be."
Teru says, "I can not say i know what you are referring to..but i would appreciate it if you didnt rile up Kaezar against me anymore than has already been done."
Teru nods to you.
You stand up.

Rusty says, "Jurion.. surely you aren't serious.."

You say, "No. You weren't speaking of revolution in the Town Green, either."

You say, "Or of arranging to have Sarafina arrested."
You say, "Honestly. You'd think you could pick a better place to plot."
Teru says, "If i wished it to be a secret..i would use a room.."
Teru winks at you.
You say, "Of course you would."
You smile wryly.
Teru says, "Quite flattering to know you enjoy eavesdropping on everything i say.."

You say, "Give me a reason not to report the both of you to the guard."
Rusty says, "I do not believe this.."
You say, "Just one reason."
Rusty stands up.
Teru says, "And your blackmail attempts will prove ineffective..there is not much worse the citizens of Kaezar can think of me.."
Rusty says, "Go ahead and report me, Jurion."
Rusty shakes her head.
Teru says, "Like i said..quite a friend.."
Rusty says, "I thought you were a friend.."
Teru smirks.
Rusty says, "I guess I was wrong."
Rusty spits on the ground.
You say, "I thought you were an honest, loyal citizen of Kaezar."
You say, "Not a seditionist."
You say, "Pity."
